Introduction to Henan University of Science & Technology

　　Henan University of Science and Technology is located in the nationally famous city of Luoyang, an ancient Chinese capital of nine dynasties, also a modern industrial city with historic and cultural monuments. HUST possesses a satisfactory variety of disciplines covering 8 fields of engineering, economics, law, liberal arts, management, natural science, medicine and agronomy. Its scale and overall capabilities rank at the forefront among the universities in Henan province. HUST, engaged in education of postgraduates, full-time undergraduates and associate-degree college students, is a multidisciplinary polytechnic universitiy, influential both in central China and in the machine building trade.
　 This university was initially established in 1952 and is one of the earliest engineering colleges founded in Henan province with its original name of Luoyang Institute of Technology that stressed on undergraduate education. With the recent approval of China’s Ministry of Education, the new HUST was established by amalgamation of academies with Luoyang Medical School and Luoyang Agricultural School.
　 At present, HUST consists of 22 schools and departments. They are Electromechanical Engineering School, Materials Science & Engineering School, Vehicles & Motive Power Engineering School, Electronic Information Engineering School, Architectural Engineering School, Chemical Engineering & Pharmaceutics School, Law & Liberal Arts School, Foreign Languages School, Economics & Administration School, Medical School, Medical Technology & Engineering School, Agricultural School, Livestock Science & Technology School, Lifelong Education School, International Education School, Food & Bioengineering Dept, Dept of Creative Arts, Dept of Mathematics & Physics, Dept of Forensic Medicine, Dept of Gardening & Forestry, Dept of Physical Education and Modern Education Technology Center. It has a faculty of more than 2600, of whom 554 are professors, associate professors, or senior engineers, 6 tutors of doctoral students, 136 tutors of postgraduates, 18 provincial or ministerial academic leaders, 14 outstanding science and technology experts, 29 provincial or ministerial academic backbones, 35 experts enjoying special allowance from the government and 16 academicians as its part-time professors. At present, HUST has 8 provincial or ministerial key specialties, including Mechanical Design & Its Theory, Machine Manufacturing & Its Automation, Vehicles Engineering, Materials Science, Material Processing Engineering, Motive Power Machinery & Engineering, Cerebral Surgery, Cardiovascular Internal Medicine; 20 associate-degree majors, 41 specialties for undergraduates and 23 postgraduate programs as well. It also grants Master’s degrees to the on-the-job postgraduates and provides Ph. D programs jointly with other institutions. There are associate-degree college students and undergraduates of more than 28,000 and 400 postgraduates on campus. Besides, HUST is one of the first 200 universities that were authorized to enroll foreign students by the State Education Commission. Overseas students from America, Japan, Korea, France, England and some other countries come for their studies. It has cooperative programs on scientific research, exchange of teachers and cultivation of graduates with 22 overseas universities or organizations in USA, UK, Japan, Russia, Ukraine and Korea and so on.
　 The campus area of HUST is over 300 ha, with a building area of 550,000 square meters and its total fixed assets amount to 300 million RMB. The cost of its teaching and research facilities reaches 80 million RMB. Its library has a collection of over 1.35 million volumes to serve its teachers and students. Now HUST has a provincial engineering technology research center and 26 science and technology application institutions. Its annual scientific research funds have exceeded 20 million RMB. Since the ninth “Five-year Plan”, 293 state or provincial research programs have been completed, among which 92 won national or provincial prizes. 3411 articles of scientific treatises, essays or monographs and 241 works or textbooks have been published in recent years. All these have evolved a scientific research system of high quality. Among these programs, the research on Bevel Gear Driving, Abrasive Resistant Material, New-type Functional Material, Vehicle & Its Engine, Computer and Cybernetics, Clinic Medicine and Cardiovascular Internal Medicine have distinct prominence.
　 At present, HUST has such provincial key specialties as Mechanical Design & Its Theory, Machine Manufacturing & Its Automation, Vehicles Engineering, Materials Science, Material Processing Engineering and Motive Power Machinery & Engineering and so on. These specialties, with specially-engaged professors sponsored by the provincial government, are of HUST’s characteristics and advantages. Accumulated for many years, these specialties have respectively displayed their superiorities in the following aspects of scientific research, academic echelon, postgraduate programs and lab structures. In respect of the training of higher talents, these specialties have also shown their striking features compared with the similar domestic disciplines.
　 During the 10th “Five-year” period, 1140 million RMB will be invested by Henan provincial government for the infrastructure of HUST, which will help the university to improve the teaching conditions, expand the educational scale, intensify the teaching capacity and reach high-level development and breakthrough. Recently, the university gymnasium, a synthetic lab building, rebuilding of the library and some high-standard students’ dormitory apartments have been constructed. The purchasing of land and construction of the new campus are being under way. HUST has walked through more than 50 years. It will still stick to the excellent campus spirit of “being precise and realistic, uniting as one to press forward”. Struggling to develop and innovate, by endeavoring for the best and aiming at “being comparatively, domestically advanced, at the forefront and characteristic of the province”, HUST will carry out all its work down to earth, strive to accomplish the development leaping through amalgamation, and finally, make greater contributions to the economic development and social progress of the province and the nation.
