Brief Introduction of Zhenzhou Electric Power College

Zhengzhou Electric Power College (ZEPC) is located in the central region of China. It is the only college, which has the special majors of Electric Power, Thermal Power, Computer Science, and Management, all in one college. It is a cradle and base of training talented employees for Electric Power Enterprises.
I. Location:
Zhengzhou Electric Power College is located east part of Shangcheng Road in Zhengzhou. It is next to the ruins of the Shang Dynasty, and has beautiful surroundings and convenient communications. It covers a total area of 166 Mu, which is made up of teaching area, students’ residential area, sports ground, and 3 staff’s residential areas. With its perfect teaching and living facilities, strong academic atmosphere, Zhengzhou Electric Power College is an ideal academic school for young students.
II. History:
The predecessor of ZEPC was founded in 1933, which was one of the three earliest colleges in Henan Province. After 1949, it was taken over by Henan Government. By 1953, the electrical engineering subjects of six industry schools in Southern Central China merged into Zhengzhou Electric Power School. Later, It was named as Henan Electric Power Institute, then Zhengzhou Electric Power Institute, and then Zhengzhou Electric Power School. In 1994, it was promoted to Zhengzhou Electric Power College.
III. Conditions:
ZEPC has undergone different kinds of difficulties for seventy years. Now it has becoming stronger and stronger. The fixed assets of ZEPC amount to over 120 million Yuan (RMB). The total value of teaching facilities is about 40 million Yuan (RMB). There are 44 laboratories, 14 practice-teaching bases inside the campus and 8 practice-teaching base outside the campus.
ZEPC has a total building area of 120,000 M2, including teaching buildings, comprehensive experiment buildings, practice-teaching plant, Library, office buildings, International Education Center, Students Entertainment Center. The modern library has a large collection of variety books. It has a standard sports ground and a school canteen, which can hold thousands of students. There are Computer Internet Center, International Education Center, the Domestic Academy Periodical Magazines CD-ROM Center, the Combustion Experiment Center, Electric Power System Dispatch Simulation Training Center, multi-media classrooms, Foreign Language Learning Radio Station, CAI and CAD, all of them are taking a great important role in training the students into high qualified talents.
ZEPC has a group of high-qualified teachers. Now it has faculties of teaching and administration 345 members. Among them 240 are teachers, which include 57 professors and associate professors, other seniors 40, lecturers 141, double-qualifications (teacher and engineer) 37, teachers with MA or MSc 36.
IV. Subjects:
ZEPC recruits students from all of the country. There are 19 special majors, 8 special majors for 3-yeaar correspondence college students, and 3 special majors for 4-year correspondence undergraduates. Now it has an enrollment of over 3200 full-time undergraduates, 3600 correspondence undergraduates, and other forms of students over 700. In general, there are five departments in the college: Electric Engineering Department, Power Engineering Department, Management Engineering Department, the Basic Courses Department, and Adult Education Department.
Electric Engineering Department has 5 special majors: Power Station and Power System, Electricity Supply and Utility Technology, Relay Protection and Automation, Electric Engineering and Automation, and Applied Electric Technique.
Power Engineering Department has 6 special majors: Steam Power Engineering, Production Procedure Automation, Mechanical Electric Engineering, Centralized Control and Operation of Power Station, Air Conditioning Equipment and Automation, and Mold Designing and Making.
Management Engineering Department has 5 special majors: Computer Information Technology, Marketing and Selling, Financial Accounting, Computer Aided Accounting, and Tourist Management.
The Basic Courses Department has 3 special majors: E-commerce, Secretary and Business, and Public Relations and International Business.
Adult Education Department has 8 special majors: Power Station and Power System, Electricity Supply and Utility Technology, Electric Engineering and Automation, Steam Power Engineering, Steam Power Engineering Quality Test and Control, Computer Applying and Repairing, Marketing and Selling, and Financial Accounting. There is a Cooperation Program co-operated with Changsha Electric Power Institute and Northern China Electric Power University, which has 3 correspondence special subjects, including Electric Engineering and Automation, Financial Accounting, and Steam Power Engineering.
Sino-Australian Classes has 2 Special Subjects: Electric Power Engineering and Western Accounting.
V. Special Features:
The oath of ZEPC is “be united, hardworking, down-to-earth and constantly developing” to improve the overall quality and creative ability of our students, to emphasize the practice of teaching, to train the students to become high qualified applied employees. The rate of employment of its graduates is ranked at the forefront of other similar colleges in Henan Province.
In order to encourage the students to study hard, the college has established the Scholarship System and Credits System. The college tries to help and encourage the students taking part in scientific research work. Under the guidance of the teachers, the students’ scientific research item--- “Device of Power Station Coal Powder Boiling Blowing Powder Online Supervision” has won the second prize in Henan University Students Challenge Cup, and won the third prize in China National University Students Challenge Cup. The top students will be chosen and given opportunities to study in “Best Students Training Class”, to give them more training in English speaking and writing, knowledge of professional subjects, and scientific research. ZEPC has established sister college relationships with University of Minnesota, Crookston, USA and Red River Community College, Canada, having dispatched visiting scholars and teachers, and developed co-operation in academic communication and scientific research.
Under the help of China Electric Council (CEC), ZEPC and Chisholm Institute of TAFE, Australia, has established an Offshore Linkage Program, which introduces the popular and successful TAFE education system and advanced international education model to the college. It has combined academic education and vocational training together. As soon as the students enroll this program, they could have both Chinese and Australian enrollment records. After they graduate from this program, they will gain both Chinese and Australian Diplomas and Certificates. Successful students can continue studying BA or BSc in Australia or in China.
Because of its the advanced teaching and living facilities, good engineering surroundings, scientific teaching management system, beautiful campus and strong academic and cultural atmosphere, ZEPC was evaluated as an “Excellent College” by Henan government and the State Electric Power Company, and was marked as National Key Demonstration Developing College of China.
